To give you a sense of how Chinese numeric sites are rising in the Alexa global site rankings, as Chinese internet penetration continues to grow rapidly.
51.la is ranked #322 in Alexa globally, #30 in China. Apparently only a year ago it was ranked around #10,000, so it's quite a jump.
Also, 58.com is ranked #450 globally, and #42 in China. Last time we reported on it, it was ranked #759 globally and #81 in China.
1133.cc is ranked #672 globally, and #68 in China. A year ago, this appears to have been ranked lower than #10,000.
The source for numeric domains, with a focus on NNNNN.com's (five digit .coms) and other short domains. Market analysis, China, registration trends, and auction results. Cryptocurrencies like Bitcoin and Ethereum may be the currencies for the internet. But domain names are the real estate.

Update on the NNNNN.com Landscape
It appears that a significant portion of NNNNN.com's bought almost 2 years ago in the buyout are still registered. Doing some random sampling today, I found that in a random sample of 2500 5-digit numbers, only 233 are available for registration. This suggests that 9,320 are available to be registered, with a margin of error of 1.94. This is about 1/2 of the NNNNN.com's that were available a few weeks before the buyout. I will try to find out more about who is holding or buying these domains and report back. In the meantime, here is the available domain list from the random sample so you can see how they are distributed. As would be expected, a significant portion of the available domains (16%) start with "0", as these are the generally the weakest. Only 2 domains that start with "1" were available in the sample.

New Popular Numeric Site
I just checked Alexa.com's rankings for the top 100 site in China, and the old standards were there, but there was a new entry, 58.com. This site a year ago was only in the top 10,000 global sites, now it is in the top 1,000 (#759), and is in the top 100 in China (#81). So it has really shot up.
Now what this site offers, I have no idea... It looks like a directory of some sort, possibly an Ebay-time auction site? Who knows, it's all Chinese to me.

Random Snapshot of the NNNNN.com Landscape
Post-buyout, it is interesting to look at what the NNNNN.com landscape looks like. This is hopefully the first of many random samplings of the NNNNN.com's to see whether they are developed sites and what types of sites they are and who owns them. This is a very crude analysis, I just looked quickly to see whether it was an Chinese site, Marchex site, or parked, and if there was no site or parked, I made a brief survey of who the owner was (if there was any Asian-sounding name, I just marked it as Chinese, with no intent to offend anybody just to get a quick survey). Here is the results from looking at 102 randomly generated 5-digit numbers:
50 are Marchex zip code sites
12 have no sites but Chinese owners (it appears)
8 are parked sites with Chinese owners (it appears)
8 are parked sites with unknown owners (I couldn't find them using a quick whois lookup)
8 have been deleted and are available
7 are parked sites with US owners (it appears)
5 have developed Chinese sites (it appears)
2 have no sites but have US owners (it appears)
1 is a parked site with a Japanese owner
1 is pending delete
Although the sample has a significant margin of error, it seems to comport with previous random samples in terms of the number of Marchex sites, and it comports with the recent random samplings suggesting that about 10% of NNNNN.com's are available, whereas before the buyout in February, 2008, about 20% of NNNNN.com's are available. Of non-Marchex sites, 26 have Asian owners, 9 have US owners, and 8 have unknown owners. Not surprisingly, all the non-Marchex developed sites are Chinese.

NNNNN.com Renewals Update
I have done some random sampling of available NNNNN.com's and it looks like my predictions that about 1/2 of NNNNN.com's bought in the buyout last year would be renewed was accurate. After looking at 5 samples of 500 random NNNNN.com's, the result was that 9.6% were unregistered. The margin of error in this sampling is 1.94.
Not surprisingly, NNNNN.com's that start with "0" had the highest percentage unregistered. I did 3 samples of 500 random NNNNN.com's starting with 0, and the result was that 16.5% were unregistered. The margin of error here is 2.33.
As of the end of January 2008, there were 19,346 NNNNN.com's unregistered. Now it appears there are only around 10,000. If anyone is looking for signs of long-term strength in the NNNNN.com market, I think this is a pretty good one. Despite a severe recession and the collapse of the buyout, many people still seem to understand the value in these domains. It is still to early to tell whether registrations of NNNNN.com's are going to continue to move in a positive direction, but this news should be somewhat encouraging to those who are holding for the long-term.

Interesting Numeric Auction Results
On 2/10/09 the following auctions closed at Sedo
22.com $100,000I was surprised that 22.com ended so low, that is an awesome domain and I have seen NNN.com's go for $XXX,XXX so it was surprising that nobody with more cash showed up, probably a result of the general economy. If I had $100k to throw around, I would love to have bought that domain. Also, the other sales were surprising for how high they went, both attracted multiple bids. I don't think I have seen NNNNN.com ending in 000 go for so much.
34000.com 170 EUR (USD $219)
46000.com 110 EUR (USD $142)

Organic NNNNN.com's?
Apparently, PLU codes can be used to distinguished between organic and genetically modified products (i.e., according to Wikipedia, the code for organic yellow bananas is 94011). According to Vision Magazine:
Conventionally grown produce has a four-digit PLU that begins with three or four. Organically grown produce has a five-digit PLU that begins with nine. Genetically modified produce has a five-digit PLU that begins with eight. Now, I haven't yet heard of an organic produce company advertising this with a five-digit numeric domain name, but it might be a great idea for one to do so!
Some Interesting Numeric Auctions
Sedo currently has some exciting numerics on auction. 22.com has 5 days left and is currently at $72,000. Also, 34000.com and 46000.com are both up to 70 EUR with 5 days left as well. These auctions will be interesting to watch to see how premium NN.com and NNNNN.com's are faring in a bad domain market. 11.com sold for $188,889 last year in a private sale, but 22.com could surpass that on auction, and perhaps in a significant way. We'll be watching!

79 MILLION .com Domains!
According to Domain Tools, today we passed another benchmark in domain history. Over 79 million .com domains are registered, 79,000,932 to be exact. Shows that even in an economic downturn the number of available .com's to register keeps shrinking. And when you think that out of those 79 million, only 1k are NNN.com's, 10k are NNNN.com's, and 100k are NNNNN.com's, you see how truly scarce numeric domains are compared to the total number of domains that are already registered. Next stop, 80 million!

NNNNN.com Buyout A Year Later
We are nearing 1 year from the buyout of NNNNN.com's. As with nearly the entire domain market, things have not gone as well as many hoped. What I have done, and I think many others will do as well, is trim our portfolios and renewed the better domains. Numbers that start with 1 or other low numbers, have good number sequences, get decent traffic, represent words on cell phones, etc., are more likely to get renewed. There were about 20k NNNNN.com's available a year ago this time. I guess anywhere from 5k-15k will get dropped, probably somewhere in the middle. This is probably healthy for the NNNNN.com market in the long run, more time for people to develop their domains, wait for demand to catch up to supply, etc. The underlying dynamics that suggest strength in this market are still there, we are just in a massively bad economy for domains included, and it will take more time for Chinese internet penetration to expand (although this is happening very rapidly).
Some criteria for keeping domains I have used (not a complete list):
* Is the .org/net/info/cn/etc. owned/developed?
* Are people searching for the number or are advertisers advertising based on the number (check google adwords keyword tools for both)
* Check if the number is a US zip code, a big city foreign postal code, etc.
* Type the number into google products search and see what comes up, you may be surprised.
Also, to look on the bright side, you can see from the following SnapNames auctions that NNNNN.com's are still attracting lots of interest if they are good numbers. The numbers below are not from completed auctions, but from the e-mails SnapNames sends out telling people to join existing auctions, so final sales prices are probably much higher. Anyways, here's hoping for a better year for NNNNN.com's in 2009!

Some criteria for keeping domains I have used (not a complete list):
* Is the .org/net/info/cn/etc. owned/developed?
