Numeric Domain Auctions at 4cn: Second Half of May

Here are numeric domain auction results from 4.cn, for the last couple weeks.

Obviously, the winner was 925.com, going for over $45,000.  There were also some nice NNNN.com sales for around $1,000 and up.  Several NNNNN.com's sold for over $100 (17651.com selling for $150 was the most notable sale), and, as we have noticed, a fair number of NNNNNN.com sales as well in the $30-$50 dollar range.

Last Two Weeks Numeric Domains Auctions at 4cn

Here are the last two weeks of auction results for numeric domains at 4.cn, the premier Chinese domain auction site.

Interestingly, despite several strong sales of NNNN.com's, the prize goes to a nice sequential NNNNNN.cn, 234567.cn, which sold for around USD$2,402.

Auction results of NNNN.com's are looking very strong as well.  No auctions below $1,000 despite some domains that don't look special (9420 going for over $2,000?).

LLL.com LLL.org LLL.net NNN.com NNN.net Prices

In response to a question at DNF, we looked at data from the past few years at NameBio to determine what the average and median sale prices were for various types of three character domains.

Here is what we found.

The data is from reported sales at NameBio from 2010-Present.

For LLL.com, there were 363 sales.
For LLL.net, there were 162 sales.
For LLL.org, there were 132 sales.
For NNN.com, there were 37 sales.
For NNN.net, there were 33 sales.

Unfortunately, there were not enough NNN.org sales for a meaningful survey.  Later I will look at the data I have from 4.cn and hopefully add it to come up with a more representative sample.

The data suggests that while LLL.com average prices may be in line with NNN.com average prices, this is likely because a few LLL.com sell for well above average, and most for much less.  The median sale price for NNN.com is over double that of LLL.com.  There are some higher priced numbers, but for the most part, numbers are numbers, and any combination will do.  Prices fluctuate less within number domain categories.  This is the same story with LLLL.com and NNNN.com domains.   LLLL.com domains can go for $100,000+ or $20, whereas almost all NNNN.com domains go for around $1,000.  Sure, some may go for $10k and some may go for $650, but prices are much less volatile for numerics in general. 

So there may be a greater divergence in quality among letter domains of the same type as opposed to number domains. 

A similar phenomenon can be seen in the .net's.  LLL.nets go for around double the price of NNN.nets on average, but if you look at median prices they are virtually identical.

4.cn Auction Results for 4.15-5.3

Here are numeric domain auction results for the past couple weeks at 4.cn.  The final prices are listed in RMB (Yuan) and then in $USD. 

One of the most notable auction results was 10068.cn  selling for $3,000.  This may be the highest price for a NNNNN.cn we have seen.

Update on CCCC.com's

Not a big fan of these domains, but thought it would be interested to look at their registration numbers as evidence of expanding .com registration and increasing interest in short domains.

Back in February, 2008, we did some random sampling of certain combinations of CCCC's and came up with the following:

NLLL.com's (175,760 total of these, about 81% were available).
NNLL.com's (67,600 total of these, about 55% were available).
NNNL.com's (26,000 total of these, about 68% were available).
LNNN.com's (26,000 total of these, about 46% were available).
LLNN.com's (67,600 total of these, about 43% were available).
LLLN.com's (175,760 total of these, about 73% were available).

In doing these searches again recently, we came up with the following.

NLLL.com's (175,760 total of these, about 73% are available, down from 81%)
NNLL.com's (67,600 total of these, about 34% are available, down from 55%)
NNNL.com's (26,000 of these, about 55% are available, down from 68%)
LNNN.com's (26,000 total of these, about 26% are available, down from 46%)
LLNN.com's (67,600 total of these, about 21% are available, down from 43%).
LLLN.com's (175,760 total of these, about 64% are available, down from 73%). 

We also examined some new combinations.  Here are the results of the searches for these types:

LNLN.com's (67,600 total of these, about 87% are available).
NLNL.com's (67,600 total of these, about 91% are available).
LNNL.com's (67,600 total of these, about 89% are available).
NLLN.com's (67,600 total of these, about 91% are available).

What does all this show?  A couple things.  First is that registration has steadily increased since 2008 for some of the nicer types of CCCC's.  They are still a long way from being bought out, although probably over the next decade at least some of them will become bought out.  Also, all CCCC's are not created equal.  Ones with more numbers rather than letters are more popular in general.  And letters in earlier position increase popularity as well.  And there are some major disparities between registration numbers for the more popular types and the less popular types.
