In a previous post, I noted that there may be 100 million .com domains registered before the end of the year. I will try to break down the numbers here in a little more detail to show the math.
At the end of April, there were 94,549,208 .com domains registered according to HosterStats, which tracks registration on a monthly and historical basis..
As of today, there were 95,168,572 .com domains registered according to DomainTools, which tracks registration on a daily basis.
In May, there have been 27 days so far and an average of 22,939 .com domains registered per day. Given that there are 218 days left in the year, if the current average pace of registration is maintained for the rest of the year, there will be 100,169,274 .com domains registered by year end.
So, the countdown may go down to the wire, but it looks like we have a decent chance of seeing 100 million .com domains registered before 2012. I imagine this will be a significant milestone and receive mainstream press attention.
I will keep updating figures on the countdown.
