Here are some interesting numbers related to recent sales of US zip code .com domains.
60601.com sold for $2,600. It is a zip code in downtown Chicago with a population of 5,591, the median home/condo price in 2005 was $453,496, the median AGI in 2004 was $115,016, and the number "60601" gets about 3 million hits in google.
92624.com sold for $360. It is a zip code in Southern California with a population of 7,701, median home price $863,920, the median AGI in 2004 was $75,779, and the number "92624" gets 200,000 hits in google.
92629.com sold for $650. It is a zip code in Southern California as well with apopularion of 27,738 and median home prices of $913,710, and median AGI in 2004 was $89,735, and the number "92629" gets about 300,000 hits in google.
Clearly, the data sample is too small to make definite statements about what determines the value of a NNNNN.com zip code. But this data could suggest that google hits and being in a famous city may be more important in determining price than pure metrics of population and home prices. My own opinion is that those who bought 92624 and 92629 may have got a fabulous deal, and that the "big city" bias means there are great bargains out there on high-value zip codes in lesser-known areas.
