Five Digit License Plate Frenzy in UAE

More auction frenzy surrounding numerics, this in the United Arab Emirates. The Roads and Transportation Authority auctioned off 2, 3, 4, and 5-digit license plates, and the bidding was fierce:
The furious bidding and charged atmosphere were carried on through the very end of the session where five-digit numbers of F and G Categories were also subject to heated bidding. The total income raised from selling 13 five-digit numbers reached Dh5.568 million led by the number plate 20000 sold for Dh500,000. Ahmed Bahrouzian, CEO of RTA Licensing Agency, ranked the 56th Auction as one among the most outstanding number plate auctions in terms of turnout. Bidding momentum was maintained throughout the session for obtaining number plates ranging from two to five-digit numbers.
Given the currency conversion, that means the number 20000 sold for $136,147. We previously reported on five-digit license plate sales in Dubai, were the number 13000 went for $39,905.

Lot of 10 NNNNN.com's on auction at DP

Start is only $10 for the lot, $1/domain. Auction ends 24 hours after last bid. You can check it out here.

Numerics in the Top 100 Chinese Sites

Thought it would be interesting to tally up how many there are and what types they are, and hopefully in the future do a scarcity/popularity analysis like Sevent did regarding the Alexa Top 500.

Two are NN.com's (51.com #4 and 56.com #7)
Three are NNN.com's (163.com #9 and 126.com #56)
One is an NNNN.com (9158.com #68)
Three are NNNNN.com's (12530.com #26, 96333.com #34, and 17173.com #100)
And four have other extensions (6.cn #11, 39.net #41, 5460.net #84, and 163888.net #92).

So 13 are pure numerics, and a bunch of others have numbers in them.

Happy 78746 (Purim) from Belize

Today is the holiday of Purim in the Jewish Calendar. Spelled out on a cell phone "Purim" is 78746. So in honor of the holiday and the recent NNNNN.com domain buyout, I thought I would check out the numeric .com domain of Purim, 78746.com.

I thought it would be a Marchex zip code website for Austin, TX, because 78746 is the zipcode for Austin. But instead, as you can see, it is a Belize vacation website. Interesting. Who knew? Anyways, more evidence of interesting uses of numeric domains, and NNNNN.com's in particular.

Also, I recently came accross another interesting use of a numeric domain, 1903.com. The site sells military wings and insignia, and uses the numeric 1903 because of the 1903 Wright Flyer. I also saw this great comment from the site owner: "Lets face it it is a lot easier to remember 1903 than Aviationwings or militaryinsignia."

Evaluation of 100 Random NNNN.com's

I surveyed 100 random NNNN.com's, 15 were developed sites, 9 were Chinese sites, 2 were worddial sites, 1 was an Asian business (Asian Capital Resources Holdings Ltd., 1 was a music site, 1 redirected to Arabian Perfumes (?), and 1 was for Litchfield County (again, ???). The margin of error on this sample is about 10% at the 95% confidence level, so I need to do some more samples before the margin of error is reduced. Anyways, the number of developed sites is about what I would expect, we'll see if that holds up in future samples.

Like the NNNNN.com's, a lot of the developed sites are Chinese sites. Given that the Chinese market is one of the biggest growth areas for the internet over the next 5-10 years, this bodes very well for prices of NNNN.com's and NNNNN.com's. And, like the NNNNN.com's, the other developed sites are a random mix. The main difference between the NNNN.com's and the NNNNN.com's in terms of development is the use of zip codes. The zip code uses for the NNNNN.com's mean that about 45% of the NNNNN.com's are developed sites, a much larger percentage than are developed in the NNNN.com's. So, the percentage of NNNNN.com's available for a reseller market is much smaller than in the NNNN.com's. Usually, development potential decreases the more digits or letters you have, most likely more developed LL.com's than LLL.com's, and so on. So this is certainly a unique feature in the domain market which could have a potential effect on ultimate prices of NNNNN.com's. Also, the NNNNN.com's can be used as foreign postal codes for many countries, and the development potential for this has yet to be fully explored.

With other domains, there is a significant discount when you add another digit or letter to a domain that is often near or more than the scarcity factor. For example, random NNN.com's are worth about 15x as much as random NNNN.com's (about $10k v. $500), even though they are 10x as scarce. It is very possible that the ultimate disparity in prices between NNNN.com's and NNNN.com's will be even less, given that NNNNN.com's have more development potential and are more scarce, relatively, than their NNNN.com brethren.

Cash Parking Improvements at GoDaddy

It seems that after hiring Adam Dicker, GoDaddy has been making vast improvements in its cash parking system. They recently introduced the ability to get detailed traffic statistics on where visitors are coming from, how they are getting there, and what ads they clicked on. Very valuable information, especially for those of us that have numeric domains with lots of Chinese traffic, but not sure which keywords to use. The main downside to GoDaddy parking is still the monthly fee, but with a large portfolio I find that the fee is negligible.

Anyways, hopefully more domainer-friendly improvements will be coming to GoDaddy in the near future, like a much improved site for auctioning and selling domains (we can dream). There is a real need in the market for a quality auction and sales site, right now all of the options have disadvantages, Snapnames is great but has high fees, Sedo gets lots of bidders but buyers often don't pay and the site is a nightmare to navigate, and forums are good for reselling to domainers but not for selling to end-users. If GoDaddy could leverage its position as a popular site among non-professional domainers and bring in professional domainers as well as end-users with a high-quality auction and sales site, the market would respond very well in my opinion.

Got Some Super-Cheap NNNN.com's

Sevent, a top numeric domainer, just recently started a forum for numeric domains which you should join. To kick off the forums, Sevent is selling some of his NNNN.com's for well below market value, I just got two NNNN.com's for a grand total of $375! Market price is generally more than $400 for a single NNNN.com, so this is a superb deal.

Sevent will be posting some more sales in the near future, so be sure to sign up and check the forums for these great deals. And the forum looks to be a great resource for numeric domainers to share knowledge and to conduct sales. A great development for the numeric domain community.

Recent Zip Code Sales

Here are some interesting numbers related to recent sales of US zip code .com domains.

60601.com sold for $2,600. It is a zip code in downtown Chicago with a population of 5,591, the median home/condo price in 2005 was $453,496, the median AGI in 2004 was $115,016, and the number "60601" gets about 3 million hits in google.

92624.com sold for $360. It is a zip code in Southern California with a population of 7,701, median home price $863,920, the median AGI in 2004 was $75,779, and the number "92624" gets 200,000 hits in google.

92629.com sold for $650. It is a zip code in Southern California as well with apopularion of 27,738 and median home prices of $913,710, and median AGI in 2004 was $89,735, and the number "92629" gets about 300,000 hits in google.

Clearly, the data sample is too small to make definite statements about what determines the value of a NNNNN.com zip code. But this data could suggest that google hits and being in a famous city may be more important in determining price than pure metrics of population and home prices. My own opinion is that those who bought 92624 and 92629 may have got a fabulous deal, and that the "big city" bias means there are great bargains out there on high-value zip codes in lesser-known areas.

08622

I was browsing Chinese domains today for discussion of the NNNNN.com buyout and I came accross a great Chinese site with discussion of the domain industry and the recent NNNNN.com buyout. And, the site is itself an NNNNN.com! You can see it at 08622.com, if you follow the link it takes you to a google translate version of a recent discussion on the site about investing in domains.

FiveThirtyEight.com

As someone who loves numbers and numeric domains and is a political junkie, I was excited to see a new election data blog spring up that looks very good and is called "FiveThirtyEight.com".

538 is the number of electors in the electoral college and it's cool that the site is using a number for its name, even if it's not a true numeric. Maybe the creator originally wanted to buy 538.com but came up against the astonishing realization that an NNN.com is worth $10k minimum, and if an end-user is buying, the sales have been anywhere from $30k-$300k recently. There are only 1,000 of these domains and they have long been all bought out by domainers. Good news for those of us that own numeric domains, not so great for people who don't have the marketing budget of a multinational company and just want to set up a nice little numeric website without spending $30k or more!

Hopefully people won't mind typing in the words for the three numbers, I would guess not, it's still a pretty unique site name. Also, if FiveThirtyEight.com really takes off, perhaps the owner will be able to buy the NNN.com (or rent it for the election season at least). Also, I bet the owner of 538.com is getting a nice spike in traffic these days!

Are Domain Names Recession-Proof?

The Wall Street Journal ran an article today about whether there is such a thing as a "recession-proof" industry and noted in the second sentence that domain names are currently discussed as possibly being recession-proof. It's an interesting debate. I think it's very possible that domains are more recession-proof than other industries, simply because of the fact that global growth of internet use will continue at a very fast pace for the foreseeable future. And for short, generic domains (and numerics are the ultimate generics), they aren't making any more of them and increased demand will inevitably bring upward pressure to bear on prices. Anything could happen of course, but the most likely negative effects of a global recession on the domain name industry is to slow the rate of increase in prices. Or, it could spur people looking for "safe bets" to turn their capital to the domain market en masse.

Recent Sales of NNNNN.com's

Here are some recent NNNNN.com sales I am aware of:

92624.com sold for $360 on Sedo this week, it's a very small zip code in S. California (population under 8,000), but homes are worth over $900k apparently.

60601.com (Chicago zip code) sold for $2,600 on NameJet.

55559.com (tiny zip code in MN, most likely sold for the repeating digits) sold for $161 at Snapnames.

And 10323.com (not a zip code) is currently on auction at Sedo for $60.

So it looks like zip codes, numbers that start with "1", and numbers with repeating digits are already selling very well following the buyout. Please let me know if you're aware of other sales of NNNNN.com's.

More developed NNNNN.com's

I've done another sample of 100 random NNNNN.com's to see how many are developed sites. The first sample showed 46 developed sites, the second sample showed, 52, and this one showed 41. I think there is now enough in the sample size to make a decent prediction about NNNNN.com development in general. With a sample of 300 out of a population of 100,000, the margin of error is down to 5.65%. So at the 95% confidence level, the percentage of NNNNN.com's that are developed sites is 46.33% (with the margin of error its 40.68%-51.98%). That means there are only about 54% of the NNNNN.com's available to be developed.

In the recent sample, the trends from the earlier ones were present. There were 30 Marchex Zip Code sites (listed as "MZC"), 7 Chinese sites, 1 mobile phone site (Aradiom), and 3 other sites, including a contemporary art site (48073). The main uses for these domains so far are as postal codes, Chinese sites, and mobile phone sites. These are all great areas for future growth, given that many valuable foreign postal codes are 5-digits, including France, Germany, Kuwait, Spain, Sweden, and Italy, and there already seems to be some interest in developing these domains. Also, internet access continues to rapidly expand in China (internet penetration is still only 16% of the Chinese population, up from 10% a year ago!), making the NNNNN.com market well positioned for that explosion of future growth as well. Finally, the mobile phone uses for NNNNN.com's, either as spelled words or as quick means of accessing a website, are just beginning to be explored. Jamptap has a great post that gives a preview of the potential in this market. Finally, Adam Dicker blogged recently about potential growth in the value of numeric domains.

Can Clinton Erase Obama's Popular Vote Lead?

I'm going to take a break from the usual blogging about numeric domains in order to do a brief analysis of the Democratic primary popular vote count. Since Clinton is not going to be able to catch Obama in pledged delegates, it appears she is staking her hopes on winning the overall popular vote. Currently, the popular vote stands at 12,992,679 for Obama, and 12,406,988 for Clinton, giving Obama a lead of 585,691 popular votes going in to the remaining primaries (this is not counting Florida or Michigan).

In order to make a very rough prediction of how many voters there will be in the upcoming Democratic primaries, I looked at the number of voters for Kerry in 2004 and compared that to the results from the March 4 primaries. Excluding Texas, which had basically the same number of Democratic primary voters as voters for Kerry (probably because it was an open primary and there was a very strong Hispanic turnout), it appears that the number of Democratic primary voters in 2008 is about 80% of the number of voters for Kerry in 2004 in that state. Here are the results from 2004 and predictions of future turnout in the upcoming primary states (excluding Puerto Rico) based on the 80% number:

TX: 04 for Kerry=2,825,723 | 08 Primary=2,816,224 (99.66%)

OH: 04 for Kerry=2,741,165 | 08 Primary=2,186,831 (79.78%)

RI: 04 for Kerry=247,407 | 08 Primary=183,865 (79.78%)

VT: 04 for Kerry=183,621 | 08 Primary=151,380 (82.44%)

MS: 04 for Kerry=445,608 | 08 Primary=356,486 (*80.00%)

PA: 04 for Kerry=2,885,773 | 08 Primary=2,308,618 (*80.00%)

NC: 04 for Kerry=1,501,783 | 08 Primary=1,201,426 (*80.00%)

IN: 04 for Kerry=967,346 | 08 Primary=773,877 (*80.00%)

WV: 04 for Kerry=322,276 | 08 Primary=257,821 (*80.00%)

KY: 04 for Kerry=712,431 | 08 Primary=569,945 (*80.00%)

OR: 04 for Kerry=943,163 | 08 Primary=754,530 (*80.00%)

MT: 04 for Kerry=173,710 | 08 Primary=138,968 (*80.00%)

SD: 04 for Kerry=149,225 | 08 Primary=119,380 (*80.00%)

* Prediction

Therefore, without counting the Wyoming and Guam caucuses and the Puerto Rico primary, which I don't know how to estimate turnout for, it looks like there are about 6.5 million votes left to be had. So if Clinton is going to erase Obama's lead in the popular vote, she is going to need about 55% of the popular vote in the remaining primaries. Again, this is a very rough estimate and the numbers could vary wildly from these predictions, but it is a useful starting point for thinking about how well she would have to do to erase his lead. Given that Obama will likely win states like Mississippi, Oregon, and North Carolina, the math gets even worse for Clinton to erase the popular vote lead.

If there are re-votes in Florida and Michigan, then those numbers could be as follows:

FL: 04 for Kerry=3,574,509 | 08 Primary=2,859,607 (*80.00%)

MI: 04 for Kerry=2,475,046 | 08 Primary=1,980,037 (*80.00%)

That would mean that there would be about 11.3 million votes available in the upcoming primaries, and that Hillary would have to net on average about 53% of the vote in all the upcoming primaries in order to erase Obama's lead in the popular vote.

Is Proxiti the French Marchex?

I just saw this very interesting post over at Namepros:
I have all of my NNNNN.com domains parked at Parked.com. Today I log in to check my stats from yesterday and I discover that 57230.com had two clicks yesterday for $3.83 per click. I usually have a good number of clicks on my NNNNN domains, but this one made me want to do a bit more research. I started to do a little research on the domain and found out that 57230.info is registered.

It appears that 57230 is a CEDEX number (postal code) for France. They also use a five digit format. 57230.info is a Proxiti site that is a network of 6,000 sites for France. It looks like to me that this is just like the Marchex .com and .net sites for US Zip codes.

Just another example of the demand for number domains.

That is certainly intriguing. What is it with these postal code sites using extensions other than .com? Marchex directs everyone to the .net of its zip code sites, and Proxiti is using .info. Pretty weird, plus Proxiti doesn't seem to have developed its sites very much, or advertised them, since they don't seem to rank high in searches. Anyways, I think there is a great deal of potential for foreign zip code domains, especially in high-value areas, and this shows that Marchex is not the only company that has thought of using postal codes for sites. Just as an experiment I looked at a main postal code for Paris, 75005, and Proxiti has a site set up at 75005.info, and 75005 .com is parked, but the parked page advertises in French and English:
CE NOM EST DISPONIBLE / THIS NAME IS AVAILABLE... Please contact us for more information.
That would certainly be a nice NNNNN.com to have!

NNNNN.com's in China 5数字COM 5字母.com

I think I have finally figured out how to find information on the NNNNN.com market in China, they are referred to as 5数字COM (5 Figures Com) and google translate helps with the rest. Here is a post on domain.cn about how to value NNNNN.com's, some interesting stuff for those of us trying to figure out what makes these valuable in China:

For a long time not to the Forum. 年后来发现5数字.COM光了? 不知道包含没包含4. Discovered five years later figures. COM light? Do not know contained not contain 4.

还看到有人狂收, 也有人狂卖. Also see someone mad at, it was also Juemai.

100以下不知道能收到什么样的。 100 to receive the following do not know what kind of. 我搞5数字有3年了。 I am doing three figures five years. 可以说是最早一批接触5数字的。 Can be said to be the first contact with a number of 5 figures. 曾经有5数字.COM卖到2W RMB价格的。 Had 5 figures. COM sold 2 W RMB prices. 再高没有过了。 Never again a high.
现在留的大多也是续费2年以上的, 从去年开始其实就很难收到好的5数字了。 Now the remaining are mostly Renewal more than 2 years, from the beginning of last year it will be very difficult in fact received good five figures. 进仓也越来越少了。 JINCANG increasingly less. 到目前为止,本人所有5数字.COM不足100个了。 So far, I am all five figures. 一般而言0开头的不好。 Generally speaking 0 beginning of the bad. (4数字.COM 0开头的有区号,非区号还能有碰上生日。5数字不同.) 带4的一般也不是很好。 (4 figures. COM 0 is the beginning of the code, there are also non-code came birthday. Five different figures.) With four general is not very good. 3个4在一起的。 3 4 together. 我去年都扔了很多。 Last year, I have thrown a lot.

Another 100 Random LLLL.com's

I just looked at another 100 random LLLL's to see how many were developed sites. In this sample, 18% were developed sites, 10/100 were English language sites (one was for a Kuwaiti business), 5/100 were Asian sites (mainly Chinese although I'm not 100% with the characters so it could be a similar language), 2/100 were Spanish language sites, and 1 was a Turkish site. I know the sample sizes aren't big enough yet to have very good statistical soundness, but as I do more the margins of error will decrease and I will publish the revised overall statistics.
